Sterilisation of closed cooling water circuits

Testing for presence of bacteria in closed cooling water systems (using dip slides) is important to combat infections which can cause acidic conditions in the system leading to corrosion. 0.5 to 1.5 lits/ton should be added to the system to combat contaminated systems. After circulation for 3 days the contents should be dumped.

System should then be flushed with fresh water before refilling with water and corrosion control chemicals. Retest system for presence of bacteria after 24-36 hours.

If contamination persists, then the above process should be repeated.

Sterilisation of lubricating oil systems contaminated with water

Lube oil systems can become contaminated with water. Presence of water provides excellent growing conditions for bacteria which can cause corrosion, water emulsion and clogging of filters.

To prevent above in new systems 0.5 lit to 1 ltr Star Biocontrol WT per ton new oil should be added.

If system is contaminated

• Add 0.3 to 0.5 lit Star Biocontrol WT to the system to stop increased contamination. Properly disinfect when time allows. Or
• 80-90% of contaminated oil should be removed to the renovation tank, heated to 85-95°C and separated for 12 hours.
• After 12 hours, continue heating for further 12 hours. To the remaining oil in the sump tank, add 0.5 to 1lit Biocontrol WT to each ton of fluid. Circulate for 12 – 24 hours.
• During this period, dead microorganisms may clog filters and these may need cleaning during the procedure. Empty and clean sump tank. Rinse for 24 hours with flushing oil dosed with 0.5 to 1 lit Star Biocontol WT per ton, before refilling the system. Transfer circulating oil back into the sump tank and top up with fresh oil.

You should check with oil manufacture ref dosage rates for your brand of oil. If bacterial contamination has already caused corrosion in the system, the oil should be fully replaced. Consult oil supplier.
