What's the difference between marine safety equipmnet and life-saving appliances (LSA)?
Marine safety equipment is a broad term covering the systems, devices, and equipment used to help keep vessels, crew, passengers, and cargo safe during day-to-day operations and emergency situations. This can include firefighting systems, fire extinguishers, gas detection equipment, alarms, emergency lighting, communication devices, and navigation safety equipment. Life-saving appliances (LSA) are a specific category within marine safety equipment that are designed to protect and preserve life during an emergency. Examples include lifejackets, liferafts, lifeboats, immersion suits, emergency escape devices, and distress signalling equipment. In simple terms, marine safety equipment covers the wider safety infrastructure found onboard a vessel, while LSAs are specifically focused on evacuation, survival, and rescue in the event of an incident at sea.
