Graduate Mechanical Engineer – Davit Technician

Are you a mechanical engineering graduate or NVQ Level 3 qualified engineer looking to kickstart your career in a hands-on field service role with full training and clear progression? This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-established company that specialises in marine safety equipment.

Star International will fully invest in your development, providing both internal and industry specific training on specialist lifting equipment including, winches, davits and hooks to support the lifeboats on board vessels.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely keen to learn, and to develop new skills with a technical mindset, willing to work onboard vessels, in all weathers, travelling to ports throughout the UK in order to build a long-term career within the marine safety industry.

For over 20 years, our customers vessels have sailed confidently in the knowledge that they comply with all IMO regulations with every piece of equipment Star International has supplied or serviced.

As an accredited ISO business with 9001, 450001 and 23678 along with MCA approvals and various other flags such as Lloyds, Bureau Veritas & DNV, our technicians are trained to a high standard to ensure that anyone maintaining or inspecting lifesaving equipment is competent, properly trained, and working to a uniform global standard.

Our davit technicians, will initially shadow experienced engineers across UK sites, learning how to service, repair, and maintain davits, hooks winches, lifting gear and lifeboats in line with ISO 23678, which is an internationally recognised standard that defines how technicians must be trained and certified to work on lifeboats, rescue boats, launching appliances, and release gear on ships.

Over three years you will be assessed at a specialist training centre in Denmark and through experience and knowledge will become a fully qualified technician.

The role

  • Based out of our Birkenhead branch you will shadow senior engineers across the UK at ports and onboard assisting with testing commissioning, repair, and maintenance of life saving appliances & equipment
  • Hands on physically demanding role
  • Receive full internal and manufacturer-led training
  • Travel regularly onboard vessels to carry out maintenance (80-90% travel)
  • Progress towards becoming a fully qualified technician
  • Salary starting at £28K depending on experience (up to £40-45k with overtime)
  • Generous overtime and overnight and subsistence allowances

The person

  • Mechanical engineering graduate or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent)
  • Interest in marine safety equipment and lifesaving appliances
  • Willing to travel regularly throughout UK
  • Over 21 with full UK driving licence as travel is a fundamental part of the role and for insurance purposes
  • Clean criminal record – full security checks will be completed due to our client base.
  • £28K DOE (up to £40-£45k with O/T)
