Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy

By embedding health, safety and environmental responsibility across our business, we protect people, safeguard the environment, and support the long-term sustainability of our customers’ operations

At Star International, we recognise that the way we operate has an impact on both people and the environment. Protecting the health and safety of our employees, customers, and contractors, while reducing our environmental footprint, is central to how we do business.

We are committed to managing our operations responsibly by preventing pollution, reducing waste, complying with all legal requirements, and continually improving our performance through innovation, investment, and engagement.

Managing health, safety and environmental risks

We operate robust systems to identify, assess and control risks associated with our business activities. This includes safe handling, storage, and transport of hazardous materials in line with COSHH, IMDG, and other applicable regulations.

Our teams are trained to recognise potential hazards and take preventative action. We ensure that:

  • All waste, particularly hazardous waste, is minimised and disposed of through licensed, traceable handlers.
  • Pollution risks to air, water and land are monitored and controlled.
  • Our premises and equipment are maintained to high safety standards.
  • Energy use and emissions are regularly reviewed to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Non-renewable resources are conserved wherever possible and replaced with renewable or sustainable alternatives.

Auditing, standards and continuous improvement

Our Quality and Safety Management Systems are fully certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 standards. These form the foundation of our integrated approach to quality, safety, and environmental performance.

We carry out a structured programme of internal audits to review every aspect of our operatio, from procurement and chemical storage to delivery, servicing, and waste management. Each audit ensures compliance with legislation, verifies that best practice is being followed, and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

We also undertake regular management reviews to evaluate performance against our objectives and targets. Findings are documented and followed up through our QMS to ensure accountability and continuous improvement across all departments.

Responsible suppliers and sustainable products

We work only with suppliers who can demonstrate environmental responsibility and compliance with all waste, safety, and quality standards. All new equipment, vehicles, and consumables are evaluated for efficiency, safety, and environmental performance before approval.

Every chemical we supply is:

  • Fully approved and documented, with current Safety Data Sheets, correct labelling, and certification in line with IMO, SOLAS, and class society requirements.
  • Safe to use and transport, packaged to IMDG standards, and supported by expert advice from our team.
  • Designed with the environment in mind: we offer biodegradable cleaners, chlorine-free disinfectants, and fluorine-free firefighting foams as part of our greener range.

By partnering with Star International, our customers can reduce risk, support ESG goals, and operate more sustainably at sea.

Our people and training

We believe that health, safety, and environmental excellence begins with our people. All employees receive accredited training relevant to their roles, supported by regular toolbox talks, refresher sessions, and ongoing professional development.

We promote a culture of open communication: encouraging our teams to report concerns, suggest improvements, and contribute ideas for safer, more sustainable operations. Our apprenticeship programme ensures new staff gain essential skills, while our reward and recognition initiatives celebrate positive contributions to safety and sustainability.

Fleet and logistics

Our fleet is managed to the highest standards by our dedicated Fleet Manager. Vehicles are sourced from ethical suppliers with strong green credentials, maintained regularly, and tracked for safe and efficient operation.

We plan routes carefully to reduce fuel use and emissions, and our cloud-based system records pre-use checks, servicing, and compliance documentation. This helps ensure all journeys are safe, lawful, and environmentally responsible.

Review and accountability

This policy is reviewed annually, or sooner if significant changes occur in legislation, company operations, or best practice. Responsibility for its implementation lies with senior management, who ensure adequate resources and leadership are in place to maintain compliance and continuous improvement.

By embedding health, safety, and environmental responsibility into every part of our business, we help protect people, preserve the environment, and ensure the ongoing sustainability of our operations and those of our customers.
